The best Selfie Spots in Vienna – (that you never knew excisted before)

But no matter which type of selfie you prefer, it’s needless to say that this type of self-picture taking has become one of the biggest trends in our everyday life. Even the Oxford Dictionary added the word “selfie” as an official word!

1. #PraterHeights

Who is it for: Height Heads

If you’ve always aimed high with your selfies, take subway lines U1 or U2 to Praterstern to ride the Vienna Ferris Wheel.

Not the biggest fan of heights (its highest point is at 64.75 meters) and you’re also strapped for cash? No problem, impressive selfies can also be shot at the base of the Ferris Wheel.

By the way:
Did you know that the Ferris Wheel was almost torn down in 1916? The permit was signed already, the only thing lacking to actually do it was money. Bottom line: Sometimes, a lack of funds can lead to very positive outcomes.

2. #DonaukanalPromenade

Who is it for: Street Artists

Viennese street life can be found at the arm of the Danube river flanking Schwedenplatz. The promenade on both sides of the river offers ships, graffiti art, and spectacular views. Be it summer or winter, there is always something going on here.

There are many spots for the perfect shot along the 17.3 kilometers long Danube channel. We highlight one for you.

By the way:

Wooden bathing ships that shielded swimmers from prying eyes already existed at the end of the 19th century. Since 2003, the water is once again clean enough to go swimming here. But beware: the strong currents can be very dangerous! Contemporary bathing ship Badeschiff offers a safe alternative.

Tip:

Especially at night, the fantastically lit waterfront is excellent for taking a stroll.

3. #ShoppingInStyle

Who is it for: Shopping Queens and Kings

Shopping in style — the Viennese do that in that in the stilwerk building next to the Danube channel that was designed by Jean Nouvel in 2010. Great selfie spots can be found there before, during, and after shopping. On the outside of the building, you can put yourself into differently colored limelights according to the time and point of view. In the interior courtyard, you will find the vertical garden designed by Patrick Blanc.

During the Vienna Biennale 2015, the stilwerk became a dependence of the MAK Vienna in order to explore how people will be living in the future.

Tip:
After sunset, the illuminated ceilings by Swiss artist Pippilotti Rist make an excellent selfie backdrop. Go to the first floor. With the Danube channel behind you, there is a little bridge on the left at medium height leading into the light installation.

4. #Mannerschnitte

Who is it for: Sweet Tooth Calling

The Manner flag store at Stephansplatz 7 in 1st district:

Especially at night, you can position yourself at the heart of a heavenly chocolate paradise.

And you will be in the middle of the city, looked upon by the Steffl — as the Viennese lovingly call St. Stephens Cathedral — just like in the famous Austrian song.

By the way:

You are standing in a historical spot! In 1890, Josef Manner I opened his first store shaded by St. Stephens Cathedral in almost the same place, at Nr. 6.

Monday to Sunday: 10 am – 9 pm

Tip:

As the lights stay on after a closing time, especially great pictures can be taken then.

5. #OurSteffl

Who is it for: History Buffs

Your oldest selfie partner on this tour is nobody less than the Steffl — as the Viennese lovingly call St.Stephen’s Cathedral — which is 900 years old. As it is an attraction as well as an actively used church, please avoid taking selfies inside. If you prefer a younger selfie partner, you can climb up to the church bell Pummerin in the north tower for no more than 5,50 Euros. Additionally, you can savor a great view of the historic city center.

By the way:
A male and a female fertility symbol can be found to the left and right of the main portal, the so-called Riesenportal. Did you manage to find them?

Monday to Saturday: 9 am to 11.30 am and 1 pm to 4.30 pm
Sunday and public holidays: 1 pm to 4.30 pm

6. #WaltzSchani

Who is it for: Music Lovers

Pose for a photo with Schani, the golden statue of the king of Waltz Johann Strauss Jr. Can you hear the Blue Danube Waltz? It was played here by the Vienna Philharmonics at the statue’s unveiling in 1921.

By the way: 

Stadtpark is an enchanted spot surrounding the Wien rivulet in the heart of Vienna. Look across the river! Over there you can see the milking hall. In the past, the milk served there came fresh directly from the cow. Today, the former dairy is known for its luxurious brunch.

Tip:
